Education: Unpacking SB664 – Teaching SB664 in Elementary

August 17, 2021

August 17, 2021 | 9 – 10:30 am

Although SB664 is a K-12 mandate, it does not require that elementary students at all grade levels explicitly be taught about genocide. On the contrary, the bill is structured in such a way that it encourages elementary educators to responsibly usher their students into understanding the complexities of history and humanity with developmentally appropriate materials rather than them being abruptly exposed to the information in middle school. In this session, educators will be introduced to the SB664 Learning Concepts, discuss best practices, unpack the guiding themes and questions OJMCHE co-created with elementary educators, and share age-appropriate resources.

This session is part of the Unpacking SB664 program series, a range of asynchronous and synchronous professional developments aimed at supporting the learning and teaching of Oregon’s Holocaust and Genocide studies K-12 education mandate.
