A meaningful unit on the Holocaust goes beyond teaching about specific times, dates, and places. It also includes an examination of the motivations and ideology that propelled people to harm others and is multi-disciplinary, integrating world history, geography, American history, and civics. In this session, participants will gain a concise yet deep understanding of the Holocaust as we explore the origins of the Holocaust and Hitler’s rise to power, how ordinary citizens came to participate in or be indifferent to the persecution and annihilation of European Jewry, the expansion and progression of the Nazi reign of terror, Jewish responses to oppression, and the road the reconciliation and justice.
